Please bring your respirators to the appointment. A fit test is performed on the exact make, model and size each person wears on the job, so everyone being tested needs to bring their own. We do not supply respirators.

OSHA requires a medical evaluation before anyone is fit tested (29 CFR 1910.134(e)). We ask that the clearance be current within the past 12 months, which is stricter than the standard requires. Leave checked unless each person already has clearance on file that meets that window. Medical evals need ~2 business days of lead time.

P3 Safety Solutions provides OSHA-compliant respirator fit testing in Phoenix, Arizona for every tight-fitting respirator your crews wear: disposable N95 and P100, half-mask and full-face air-purifying, PAPR, supplied air and SCBA. Reusable respirators are tested quantitatively, on controlled negative pressure equipment that measures actual leakage and produces a numeric fit factor. Disposable filtering facepieces are tested qualitatively, the method OSHA accepts for them. OSHA's respiratory protection standard (29 CFR 1910.134) requires a fit test before first use, on any change of make, model or size, and at least every 12 months after that.

Respirator Fit Testing FAQ

Do I need a respirator fit test?

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 requires a fit test for any employee who wears a tight-fitting respirator on the job. The test confirms the respirator forms a proper seal on that specific person's face, so it must be done per person and per respirator model.

How often is respirator fit testing required?

Before an employee first uses a respirator, again any time they switch to a different respirator make, model, or size, and at least once every 12 months after that. A test is also required if the employee's face changes in a way that could affect the seal.

What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative fit testing?

Qualitative fit testing (QLFT) is a pass or fail check that relies on the wearer detecting a test agent by taste or smell. Quantitative fit testing (QNFT) uses an instrument to measure how much air leaks into the facepiece and produces a numeric fit factor. The difference matters for compliance, not just accuracy. OSHA caps QLFT at a fit factor of 100, which restricts it to filtering facepieces and half masks. A tight-fitting full facepiece must reach a fit factor of 500, and only a quantitative test can measure that. P3 Safety Solutions tests every reusable respirator quantitatively, on controlled negative pressure equipment that reports a numeric fit factor. Disposable N95 and P100 filtering facepieces are tested qualitatively, which is the method OSHA accepts for them.

Which respirators do you fit test?

We fit test every tight-fitting type: disposable filtering facepieces (N95, P100), half-mask and full-face air-purifying respirators, powered air-purifying respirators (PAPR) in both partial and full facepiece, supplied-air respirators (SAR), and SCBA. Each person is tested once per respirator type they wear, so someone who wears both an N95 and a full-face APR needs two tests.

Does P3 Safety Solutions handle the respirator medical evaluation?

Yes. OSHA requires a medical evaluation before an employee is fit tested or wears a respirator. We provide the medical questionnaire along with the fit testing, so both requirements are handled in one engagement.

Do we need to bring our own respirators?

Yes. A fit test is performed on the exact make, model and size each person wears on the job, so everyone being tested needs to bring their own respirator to the appointment. We do not supply them.

Can you perform fit testing on site at our facility?

Yes. We fit test at the Phoenix Safety Training Center at 6005 S 40th St, Suite 5 in Phoenix, or on site at your facility or jobsite anywhere in Arizona.

How long does a respirator fit test take?

Most fit tests take about 15 to 20 minutes per person once the medical evaluation is complete. Scheduling for a full crew depends on headcount and respirator type.

Do you provide fit test documentation for OSHA recordkeeping?

Yes. After your appointment we email you a complete records bundle containing the original fit test documentation for everyone tested, showing the respirator make, model and size, the result, and the date. When the OSHA medical evaluation is included, the physician's paperwork comes with it. The files are the originals as issued, ready for your compliance file.
